De-stressing with Big Gal Yoga

This past Sunday, me and my friend Jasmine had the opportunity to do yoga with Valerie Sagun aka Big Gal Yoga. We had no idea how local Valerie was until when I saw the event posted on Curvy Girl Lingerie’s Facebook page, which is located in San Jose.

I haven’t done yoga in a long time (like 2+ years). The first time I did yoga, I was nervous about not being able to because of my size. But, I realized I’m actually pretty flexible, just needed a few adjustments when it came to positions. The important thing about yoga, which Valerie reminded us throughout the session, was not to push your body beyond its limits. Also, don’t compare yourself to others. I think this is why so many people are afraid to try different types of exercises (or let’s be honest, any type of exercise). But, all of our bodies are different. So, the way to exercise will be different too. There are many yoga positions I can’t do because of lack of upper body strength, having big boobs that make balancing hard and just not being flexible enough. But, this shouldn’t be I shouldn’t at least try and maybe over time, I’ll see improvement.

The main motivation for me to go Valerie’s event was the hope of kickstarting my own journey of fitness. I also wanted to be surrounded by people who were body positive. Whatever helps you with your fitness journey, do it because you want to and not because of societal pressures.

One of the biggest things I’m self conscience of is my arms and  I was a little nervous posting this photo on social media but then I remembered the whole purpose of being there.
